The Bitchin’ Sauce Story: A Family Business Journey

The Birth of Bitchin’ Sauce

Every great business has an origin story, and for the Smith Brothers, their journey began in Eugene, Oregon. Growing up in a vegetarian household, their mother, a chef, often experimented with different recipes. One local product, Yumm Sauce, caught their attention and sparked an idea: what if they created their own version?

What started as an experiment evolved into a perfected recipe after years of trial and error. The secret? Raw almonds and a refined balance of flavors—a deviation from the chickpea-based version they were originally inspired by. But having a great product was just the beginning. That product became known as Bitchin’ Sauce.

Turning a Family Recipe into a Business

The first attempts to sell the sauce were humble. The Smith siblings started at farmers markets, selling an assortment of baked goods and sauces. It didn't take long to realize that the sauce was the true star. They quickly pivoted to focus solely on the sauce and needed a name that matched its bold flavor.

Enter: Bitchin’ Sauce.

The name came up spontaneously, inspired by retro slang. Their mother initially opposed it, worried it might be off-putting, but it stuck—and ultimately became an integral part of the brand’s identity. Bitchin’ Sauce quickly gained a loyal following due to its unique taste and versatility.

Scaling Up & Family Business Dynamics

With growing popularity, the business expanded to 26 farmers markets, reaching $1 million in sales from these markets alone. Family members joined in various roles, from production to sales. Porter, the eldest brother, was offered one third of Bitchin’ Sauce and bought into the company with $2,500 and sweat equity, working farmers markets and helping scale operations.

However, as the company grew, so did the challenges. Managing farmers markets, expanding into stores, and self-distributing their product became a logistical nightmare. The solution? Investing in a refrigerated delivery van  and managing deliveries themselves before landing their first big retail deal with Whole Foods Southern California. This success led to expansion into Colorado and the Bay Area.

To boost sales, they did something few companies would: relocating their families for months at a time to conduct in-store demos and build brand awareness. The grind was relentless, but it worked, propelling Bitchin’ Sauce into a well-recognized brand.

Sauce Wars Begin

The first shock came from within their extended family. Their Aunt Mary was given the Bitchin’ Sauce recipe for personal use, only to later launch a competing sauce company in San Luis Obispo.

Despite promises that her product was different, customers immediately recognized the taste—it was clear she had copied Bitchin’ Sauce. Confronted, she and her husband refused to stop. Though their company ultimately failed, there was damage to the family trust.

This wasn’t the only competition. Over time, dozens of brands tried to replicate Bitchin’ Sauce, including Trader Joe’s and Hope Hummus, both launching similar nut-based dips. The unique taste and branding of Bitchin’ Sauce, however, set it apart from the rest.

Red Flag

The internal rifts over money and business decisions reached a boiling point when Luke’s inflated paycheck was exposed. Porter and Ryan were blindsided, realizing that thousands of dollars were being redirected in ways they had not approved.

When they confronted the issue, the overpayments were immediately changed—a clear sign that they were right to be concerned. This moment set the stage for even bigger conflicts and family divisions, which would ultimately change the future of Bitchin’ Sauce forever.
